President Donald Trump was heckled at least six times during a raucous midterm rally in San Antonio on Wednesday, as protesters repeatedly interrupted his 105-minute speech backing Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton — and one protester's forcible removal turned violent when a man in a MAGA hat was recorded grabbing him by the hair.
Six disruptions in 105 minutes
Trump's "Midterm Rally" at the Freeman Coliseum — held for Paxton and congressional candidate Carlos De La Cruz, with Senator Ted Cruz also traveling with the president — was punctured again and again by hecklers, each one forcibly removed by police and security. The repeated interruptions visibly irritated the president, who lashed out at the protesters as plants.
"If there are any more paid protesters, please raise your hand and get the hell out of here," Trump told the crowd, claiming the disruptions were coordinated by "enemies of our nation" and that the protesters carried matching professionally printed signs. He mocked one protester personally — "that guy's gotta lose a lot of weight" — and joked another would "get hell" at home because "his mom voted for Trump," saying the man was "going back to mom right now."
A protester grabbed by the hair
The ugliest moment came during one removal, when a man in a MAGA hat was recorded grabbing a protester by the hair as the man was being escorted out of the arena. Video of the assault spread rapidly online, drawing backlash. The identities of both men have not been established.
Paxton's razor-thin race
The rally was really about November 3. Paxton faces Democratic nominee James Talarico in a race polls show as razor-thin, with weeks to go. Trump repeatedly mocked Talarico as "Talafreako" and needled him over a two-week absence from the trail — Talarico said he was diagnosed with flu in Dallas, which his campaign confirmed on October 7.
Trump also used the stage to announce that starting October 8, over 20 million Medicare seniors — 1.4 million of them in Texas — would receive deposits of about $90 each from the Medicare Improvement Fund. And in an awkward undercurrent for Paxton's camp, the New York Times published leaked audio of Paxton telling donors that the Dallas "Trumpapalooza" convention "dropped our numbers."
The takeaway: with the midterms weeks away, Trump's closing argument in Texas was equal parts rally and brawl — six hecklers, one ugly assault, and a Senate race too close for either side to breathe easy.
