The Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24 in a Thursday Night Football classic, riding a career-long 56-yard field goal from Andre Szmyt with 10 seconds left — then watching Aaron Rodgers' last-gasp heave get intercepted as time expired. The win lifts the Browns to 3-1 and sole possession of first place in the AFC North.

Browns vs Steelers: how the 27-24 thriller unfolded

Pittsburgh struck first, but Cleveland exploded for 21 second-quarter points — including a Quinshon Judkins 2-yard touchdown and a Deshaun Watson scoring strike to Harold Fannin Jr. — to take a 21-10 halftime lead. A scoreless third quarter set up a wild finish.

Down 11 in the fourth, Rodgers engineered a furious comeback: touchdown passes to Darnell Washington and Roman Wilson, then a strike to Pat Freiermuth followed by his own two-point conversion sneak to tie it 24-24 with 1:42 remaining. But Watson calmly marched Cleveland into range — highlighted by a big connection with Jerry Jeudy — and Szmyt drilled the 56-yarder. Rodgers' desperation final pass was picked off by Grant Delpit with one second left.

Deshaun Watson vs Aaron Rodgers by the numbers

  • Deshaun Watson: 72.7% completions, 268 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT — plus the game-winning drive in the final two minutes
  • Aaron Rodgers: 55.0% completions, 299 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT — brilliant in the rally, undone by two picks including the sealer
  • Turning points: Denzel Ward's interception of Rodgers; Chris Boswell's missed 48-yard field goal; Szmyt's 56-yard winner

What the win means for the AFC North

At 3-1, the Browns — led by rookie head coach Todd Monken and a resurgent Watson — sit alone atop the division, with three straight wins. Doing it without two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, now in Los Angeles, makes the start even more surprising. The Steelers fall to 2-2, and Rodgers — the four-time MVP, possibly playing his final Thursday night game — was visibly frustrated on the sideline with teammates and coach Mike McCarthy.

The Browns were supposed to be rebuilding. Instead, they are the team to beat in the AFC North — at least for now.
