Volvo is returning to the luxury sedan arena with the all-electric ES90, launching in India on October 12 alongside its SUV sibling, the EX90. With a 696km WLTP range, 350kW ultra-fast charging, and a drag coefficient of just 0.25, the ES90 is Volvo's most aerodynamic car ever — and its answer to the BMW i5, Audi A6 e-tron, and Mercedes EQE.

Volvo ES90: key specifications

The ES90 rides on Volvo's 800V SPA2 platform. In India it is expected with a 106kWh battery and dual-motor all-wheel drive producing 456hp and 670Nm — good for 0-100kph in 5.3 seconds. WLTP range is rated at 696km, and 350kW DC fast charging takes the battery from 10-80% in just 22 minutes.

Design and interior

Outside, the ES90 wears T-shaped LED headlamps, vertically oriented front fog lamps, and C-shaped tail-lamps over clean, uncluttered panelling. Inside: a 14.5-inch Google-based portrait touchscreen, a slim 9-inch digital driver display, a 13.2-inch head-up display, panoramic glass roof, four-zone climate control, powered front seats, Level 3 ADAS, and a Bose sound system.

What reviewers say

Carwow's Mat Watson spent a week with the ES90 and called it handsome, comfortable, and properly expensive-feeling, with "glorious" seats that make it a long-distance natural. His gripes: almost everything runs through the touchscreen — even the mirrors — and the software proved glitchy for a car costing from almost £70,000. Australia's CarsGuide praised the Scandinavian design, active air suspension, and value against German rivals.

EX90 SUV launches alongside

The EX90 shares the same 106kWh dual-motor powertrain and 5.3-second sprint, trading some range (625km WLTP) for SUV practicality — including up to six seats with second-row captain's chairs. Both go on sale in India on October 12.

The takeaway: Volvo's electric flagship duo arrives with class-leading charging speed and genuine long-distance credentials. If the software polish matches the hardware, the Germans should be worried.
