Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while director Matt Reeves steps away to focus on a family matter, DC Studios confirmed on October 5 — the latest disruption for one of Hollywood's most delay-plagued sequels.

"Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter," the studio said in a statement first reported by Deadline. "Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon."

Where Production Stood

Filming had been underway in London since the summer, with additional location work in Glasgow, where parts of the city were transformed into Gotham. No restart date has been announced, and Deadline's sources said it is too early to know whether the pause will affect the film's current release date.

The studio's wording makes clear Reeves remains attached to the project and that the interruption is expected to be temporary — not a creative shake-up or a change in leadership.

A History of Delays

The sequel has moved release dates repeatedly: first set for October 3, 2025, then pushed to October 1, 2027, and most recently to February 18, 2028. If that date holds, nearly six years will separate the March 2022 original from its follow-up — a longer gap than is typical for modern superhero movies.

The first film endured its own shutdowns: filming was halted in 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and paused again that September after a positive COVID test on set.

Who's in Gotham This Time

Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, alongside Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, Sebastian Koch and Brian Tyree Henry. Pattinson has teased that the sequel takes "a real left turn" from the first film while keeping its feel.

What It Means for DC

Reeves' Batman films exist outside the main DC Universe overseen by James Gunn — which launched with 2025's Superman and continues with 2027's Man of Tomorrow — so the pause does not ripple into Gunn's slate. Still, with Warner Bros. Discovery's merger with Skydance expected to complete imminently, any further slippage on a marquee franchise will be watched closely.

The takeaway: for now, the studio insists the pause is temporary and Reeves remains the film's creative architect — but with no timeline for his return, Gotham's wait may yet get longer.
