A Texas couple has been charged in the fatal freeway shooting of Alyssa Wilson, a 17-year-old Missouri high school senior who was killed while driving to the Saint Louis Zoo's "Boo at the Zoo" Halloween event, St. Louis County prosecutors announced Monday, October 19, 2026. The case, which investigators say was solved within 36 hours, has shaken the St. Louis region and raised urgent questions about freeway violence.
A single shot on Interstate 170
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as Wilson was driving south on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, northwest of St. Louis, according to Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the region's Major Case Squad. She had just passed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder when a single round was fired into the rear of her car.
"A person exited the vehicle and stood outside for a short period of time," Abell said at the news conference. "There was a gunshot, got back in the vehicle. The vehicle turned its hazards off and continued on."
First responders found Wilson with a gunshot wound and rushed her to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where she was pronounced dead.
The couple charged
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Willie Herndon, 42, of Arlington, Texas, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith said Monday. His wife, Taiya Herndon, was charged with hindering prosecution, accused of driving her husband to an Illinois hotel about 12 miles from St. Louis after the shooting.
Investigators tracked the couple using security video of the shooting and automated license-plate readers, which flagged the Buick's out-of-state registration. Abell said the vehicle was kept under surveillance for "long hours" before the couple emerged from a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, where they were taken into custody on Friday, October 16. A judge-approved search in Illinois turned up a gun and "supporting evidence," and a shell casing recovered from the freeway is being analyzed.
Willie Herndon later spoke with Major Crimes Unit investigators and provided details about his involvement, Abell said, adding that other cases that may be connected to the shooting remain under investigation. Officials would not discuss a possible motive.
Bail was set at $1 million for Willie Herndon and $500,000 for Taiya Herndon, to be posted in full. Both were being held in Illinois as prosecutors awaited their extradition to Missouri; St. Clair County Jail records show Taiya Herndon was booked Saturday on an out-of-state warrant. It was not immediately clear whether either suspect had retained a lawyer.
"The case was solved within 36 hours due to the collaborative efforts of the FBI, ATF and the many law enforcement agencies that are in this room," FBI St. Louis Assistant Special Agent in Charge Dave Herr said at Monday's news conference.
A life cut short weeks before adulthood
Wilson was a senior at McCluer North High School and was 60 days from turning 18, her father, Robert Hickman, said Monday. "Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future," Hickman said, fighting back tears. The family had been preparing for their first vacation together to Disney World so she could meet her favorite character, Princess Tiana.
"Unfortunately, she's not going to get to do that anymore," Hickman said. "This was a senseless act."
Abell confirmed the Herndons had no known connection to the teenager, and investigators are examining whether the couple may be linked to an earlier interstate shooting in the St. Louis area.
What comes next
The couple's extradition to Missouri is pending, and both remain presumed innocent until proven guilty. Investigators are continuing to examine whether other shootings are connected — a question that may determine whether this case stands alone or is part of a wider pattern of highway violence.
