Taylor Swift has pulled off another UK chart double, with her new single "Patient Zero" storming straight to No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart while The Life of a Showgirl returned to the top of the Official Albums Chart — marking her fifth Official Chart Double in five consecutive years and making her the only artist to score three UK No. 1 singles in 2026.
"Patient Zero" goes straight to No. 1
The lead single from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore went straight in at No. 1 in the chart week published Friday, October 2, with sales of 46,993, according to Music Week's analysis of Official Charts Company data. The result gives Swift her eighth UK No. 1 single — and her seventh to debut at the summit, a record for any solo artist.
It is also her third UK chart-topper of 2026, following "Opalite" and "I Knew It, I Knew You" from the Toy Story 5 soundtrack — the first calendar year in which she has landed three UK No. 1 singles, and a feat no other artist has matched in 2026 so far. The star-studded music video for "Patient Zero" premiered at the 2026 MTV VMAs, where Swift also collected the inaugural artist director prize.
The Encore edition powers the album back to the top
The boost came from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition released September 25 that adds four new tracks — "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding," and "Babylon" — all written and produced with Max Martin and Shellback. The album surged from No. 84 to No. 1 with 29,591 chart units (14,708 physical sales, 735 downloads and 14,148 streams), claiming its fifth non-consecutive week at the summit.
The return is perfectly timed: it lands exactly one year after the album's original October 3, 2025 release. The LP, already Swift's 14th career UK No. 1 album, is now her first to generate three UK No. 1 singles — "The Fate of Ophelia," "Opalite," and "Patient Zero." Its fellow new tracks performed too: "Cleveland!" debuted at No. 3 (25,360 sales) and "Babylon" at No. 4 (24,908), while "Pink Clouding" would have entered at No. 6 but was "starred out" since only three tracks by one artist can chart.
Total UK sales for The Life of a Showgirl now stand at 815,618 — and the album's original opening-week haul of 423,000 chart units was the biggest opening for an international album in the UK this century, per the Official Charts Company.
Five straight years of chart doubles
This is Swift's fifth Official Chart Double, and remarkably, she has now pulled off the feat in every one of the last five years — 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — with a different album and single combination each time.
Elsewhere in the chart week of October 2–8, London grunge-rockers Keo settled for No. 2 on the albums chart with their debut Put a Smile on Me after leading the midweek update, while Nothing But Thieves scored their fourth straight Top 5 album with Stray Dogs at No. 3 and Olivia Rodrigo's You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love held No. 4.
Takeaway
One year after its record-breaking debut, The Life of a Showgirl is somehow bigger: The Encore edition has turned an anniversary reissue into a triple No. 1 triumph, extending Swift's unbeaten run of annual UK chart doubles to five years. With "Patient Zero" already holding both the singles and airplay No. 1s, the Showgirl era shows no sign of slowing down.
