The Batman Part II has a new man in the director's chair — temporarily. DC Studios confirmed on Thursday that Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh will direct the final weeks of principal photography on the Robert Pattinson sequel while writer-director Matt Reeves continues to attend to a family matter, in one of the most unusual rescue missions in recent blockbuster history.
Reeves: "I am not leaving The Batman Part II"
The announcement followed a production pause earlier in October, when Reeves stepped away from the London set for personal reasons — a move first reported by Deadline and Entertainment Weekly around October 5, and confirmed by Pattinson himself at the October 11 London premiere of his A24 film Primetime. With the film reportedly about two-thirds complete, Warner Bros. needed a way to keep cameras rolling.
Enter Soderbergh, 63 — the Ocean's Eleven and Traffic director, who won the Academy Award for Traffic in 2001 and most recently directed Black Bag. According to DC Studios, Soderbergh personally approached Reeves and offered to help, in an arrangement the studio fully supports: "Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfil Matt's vision of the film."
Reeves moved quickly to shut down exit rumors, posting on X on October 15: "Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography." James Gunn, DC Studios co-chair, was equally blunt with fans on Threads: "Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be."
A gentler handover than DC's past
This is not a repeat of the infamous 2017 Justice League overhaul, when Joss Whedon took over from Zack Snyder under very different circumstances. Soderbergh himself framed his role as protective of Reeves' work: "I thought Matt Reeves' work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film."
Reports suggest Soderbergh's role functions much like his past second-unit work on The Hunger Games — technical execution matched to existing footage, not a new creative stamp on Gotham City. Reeves will oversee post-production when he is able to return.
What it means for the February 2028 release
The sequel — starring Robert Pattinson alongside Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch — remains scheduled for release on February 18, 2028. If the handover works as advertised, audiences may never be able to tell where Reeves' footage ends and Soderbergh's begins.
