US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Europe to "wake up from its long slumber" on Wednesday, warning from beneath the Acropolis in Athens that Western civilization faces a stark choice: pursue national power or resign itself to "atrophy, servitude, and decline." The nearly 30-minute address, delivered on the historic Pnyx hill where ancient Athens held its assemblies, was Rubio's most forceful defense yet of the Trump administration's America First foreign policy.

A Warning Beneath the Acropolis

With the Parthenon glowing at sunset behind him, Rubio invoked ancient Greece as the cradle of Western civilization, then argued the West has abandoned the qualities that made it powerful. "The word 'nationalism' became a dirty word," he said. "We opened our borders, and outsourced our industry, and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay."

He rejected the idea that prioritizing one's own country conflicts with alliances. "It has become fashionable today to believe that enlightened foreign policy means prioritizing the global community over one's own people," Rubio said. "There is nothing selfish or wrong about loyalty to your nation, nor anything selfish or wrong about fighting to defend its interests above all else."

The "National Power" Doctrine

Rubio framed the coming decade as decisive: "The next decade will write the story of the next century. The course we take will determine whether the West maintains its place at the head of the world, or resigns itself to a future of atrophy, servitude, and decline."

The United States, he said, has already chosen. "We choose the unapologetic pursuit of national power: to take back control of our critical supply chains, to reindustrialize our economy, to rebuild our defense, to fight for dominance of the technologies and industries of the future." He urged European governments to follow the same path — stronger militaries, secured borders, rebuilt industry — while pointing to encouraging signs: "skyrocketing defense spending" after the NATO summit in The Hague, new partnerships, and expanded manufacturing.

A Model Ally — and a $4 Billion Deal

Rubio held up Greece as a "model ally," and the visit produced concrete results: Washington and Athens announced $4 billion in foreign military sales on Wednesday, alongside a new counterterrorism program. The Athens stop was the second leg of a three-nation tour of NATO allies that began in Iceland and ends Thursday in Lisbon.

The speech echoes Vice President JD Vance's combative February 2025 address at the Munich Security Conference and the Trump administration's November 2025 National Security Strategy, which warned Europe faced "civilizational erasure" from migration and weakened sovereignty. European leaders have repeatedly bristled at the rhetoric, calling it inappropriate pressure from an ally.

What Comes Next

The address doubled as a showcase for Rubio himself, widely seen as a leading contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination. Whether Europe hears a wake-up call or a lecture may set the tone of the transatlantic relationship for years: Rubio closed by insisting the alliance must hold — "We want to win together; we must win together" — even as he demanded the continent change course.
