The Tampa Bay Rays swept the New York Yankees 3-0 in the 2026 ALDS, clinching the series with a dramatic 4-3 win in the Bronx on October 7. It is the first time in franchise history the Rays won a playoff series without dropping a game — and the first time the Yankees have ever been swept in a division series.

Rays Sweep Yankees: ALDS Scores and Series Breakdown
The Rays outscored the Yankees 10-5 across the three games, and New York never held a lead in 27 innings. Tampa Bay entered the series as the AL's best team at 98-64, having won the AL East — and they played like it.
- Game 1 (Oct 3, Tropicana Field): Rays 1, Yankees 0 — Drew Rasmussen led a shutout as the Rays stole the opener.
- Game 2 (Oct 5, Tropicana Field): Rays 5, Yankees 2 — New York committed four errors in a sloppy night.
- Game 3 (Oct 7, Yankee Stadium): Rays 4, Yankees 3 — The sweep clincher, decided by a two-run homer and a replay reversal.
Game 3 Drama: Volpe's Overturned Homer Echoes the Maier Play
Game 3 had everything. Victor Mesa Jr. crushed a 77-mph sweeper from Max Fried 401 feet into the right-center bleachers for a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth — his first career postseason home run. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Anthony Volpe's apparent game-tying two-run homer to left was overturned by replay to an RBI double after a fan reached over the left-field fence and the ball caromed off his palm. Griffin Jax then struck out Spencer Jones to end the inning.
The play eerily mirrored the 1996 Jeffrey Maier incident — only this time, the call went against the Yankees. Aaron Boone conceded the point afterward: "Seeing the replay and seeing it unfold, I thought they did the right thing. I thought they got it right."
Bryan Baker struck out Trent Grisham for the final out, and the Rays celebrated by miming brooms at Yankees fans — Junior Caminero even led the clubhouse in a chorus of Sinatra's "New York, New York."
Historic Collapse: Yankees Swept, Judge Sidelined
The sweep rewrites the Yankees' postseason record book in the worst way: it is the first time they were ever swept in a division series and the first sweep of a best-of-five since the 1980 ALCS. The Yankees scored just five runs in the series, two straight ALDS exits now behind them, and their championship drought stretches to 17 years — matching the 1979–1995 gap.
Compounding the misery, Aaron Judge missed the entire playoff run with a calf injury. "Just hating every single moment of it," Judge said, thinking of the season's missed opportunities. Max Fried, charged with four earned runs in the clincher, was blunt: "Disappointment. It's not the way that we wanted it to end."
ALCS: Rays Await the Guardians–White Sox Game 5 Winner
The Rays now make their third ALCS trip in club history — the 2020 run also came via an ALDS win over the Yankees. The ALCS begins Monday, October 12, with Tampa Bay hosting as the AL's best-record team.
Their opponent will be decided in Saturday's decisive Game 5 between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox at Progressive Field (8:08 p.m. ET, TBS/truTV). Cleveland forced the winner-take-all game with a 9-5 Game 4 comeback in Chicago, powered by a six-run sixth inning. Gavin Williams is expected to start for the Guardians against Sean Burke for the White Sox.
Takeaway: The Rays didn't just beat the Yankees — they dismantled them without ever trailing, ending a 17-year drought narrative the wrong way for New York. October's third ALCS date for Tampa Bay could be the run that finally ends in a World Series.
