OpenAI will start showing visual display ads alongside images that users ask ChatGPT to generate, the company announced on October 5 — its biggest push yet to turn the chatbot into an advertising business aimed at a potential audience of 1.2 billion weekly users.
How the new image ads will work
The visual ads will begin appearing later this month in the US only, featuring products and services from an initial test group of advertisers, TechCrunch reported. Unlike simple text blocks with a company name and logo, users will now see full product images placed alongside AI-generated images. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
The move extends an ad strategy OpenAI introduced earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers, which was expanded to India in August. According to gagadget, OpenAI's advertising revenue reached $1 billion in August 2026, and the company is targeting $100 billion in ad revenue by 2030. The timing is pointed: it follows the launch of Meta's Muse, a free agentic AI app competing directly with ChatGPT, and comes as OpenAI races Google and Microsoft for dominance in AI.
There is a deliberate tension in the design. TechCrunch notes that integrating ads could disrupt the user experience — but that may be partly the point, as annoyed casual users could be nudged toward paid subscriptions to avoid them.
The measurement machine behind the ads
Alongside the display ads, OpenAI is building out a full advertising infrastructure. Its partner ecosystem now includes click-attribution firms AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, plus full-funnel measurement partners Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL. It has also partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on "geo-based" ad experiments, and is running brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science so advertisers can judge the ChatGPT ads environment.
The pitch to advertisers is visual storytelling at scale: brands that want to reach customers through imagery can now do it inside one of the world's most-used AI products, with an eventual target of ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users once the ads roll out globally.
Why it matters
The announcement lands in a turbulent week for OpenAI. The company just scrapped the release of its newest model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after identifying safety issues during in-house testing, and its "dots" personal AI agents are under scrutiny over hacking incidents. Betting on advertising suggests OpenAI sees its vast user base — not just model licensing — as the engine that will pay for the enormous cost of frontier AI. The question is whether users who came for a helpful assistant will stay once it starts selling them things.
