Noah Wyle is PEOPLE's 2026 Sexiest Man Alive. The 55-year-old star of ER and The Pitt takes over the title from Jonathan Bailey, who won it in 2025, and the announcement, made on Tuesday, October 27, has fans celebrating a comeback more than 30 years in the making.

He thought it was a prank

Wyle admitted he needed convincing before he accepted the honour. "I thought that sounded like a prank," he told PEOPLE in his cover story. "Just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me." The person who changed his mind was his wife, Sara, whom he married in June 2014. "She's the reason I accepted because she was very pleased that this reflects well on her taste," he said. "She thinks I'm a good guy and that the kind of person that I am and the kind of father I am, the kind of husband I am is worth promoting."

The kids, he joked, were less impressed. His son Owen, 24, told him the title would make his life harder but was "cool, Dad," while his daughter Auden, 21, simply said "No way, no way," and will tease him about it for the next 50 years, he laughed. Wyle also shares daughter Frances, 11, with Sara.

From Dr. Carter to Dr. Robby

Wyle rose to fame as Dr. John Carter on ER, which he joined in 1994 and stayed with for 15 seasons until 2009. In 2025 he returned to the emergency room as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch on The Pitt, a role that has earned him two consecutive Best Actor Emmy wins across the show's first two seasons. The medical drama returns for season 3 in January on HBO Max, and Wyle calls it the "second lightning strike" of his life.

The reveal itself came with a wink: Amy Poehler, a self-described ER superfan who once said "you go for Clooney, you stay for Noah Wyle," announced the cover on her podcast Good Hang, joking that Wyle had refused to appear until he had won the title. Asked how his "administration" would differ from Bailey's, Wyle joked that he was disappointed with the international front and would "really crack down on the borders of beauty."

Why fans are swooning

Part of the charm, PEOPLE's cover story suggests, is domestic: Wyle calls himself the "dish maven" of his house, saying "the sink is my domain," and says he does half the cooking, half the dog duties and hopefully half the parenting. After three decades in scrubs, on screen at least, the doctor is finally in, and this time the whole world is prescribing him the crown.
