The Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra, on sale October 16, 2026 at around $2,599, is the first laptop built on Nvidia's RTX Spark platform, aimed squarely at the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro. The verdict: genuine workstation-class AI power and the best display Microsoft has ever shipped on a Surface, but the base model's 24GB of memory limits what that AI hardware can do, and Windows on Arm remains a question mark for software compatibility.

Design & Display

The Surface Laptop Ultra is under 18mm thick and weighs around 4.4 pounds (2kg), which Microsoft says is lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and it comes in Platinum and a new dark Nightfall finish. The standout is the 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen: 3270 x 2180 resolution, dynamic 120Hz refresh rate and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Microsoft calls it the brightest, sharpest and most vivid display it has ever used in a Surface, rating it at up to 2,000 nits peak HDR, 25% higher than the M5 MacBook Pro. The touchscreen supports gestures but not pen input. The trackpad is the largest haptic trackpad on any Surface, over 30% bigger, and the SSD is user-removable.

Performance

The Surface Laptop Ultra debuts Nvidia's RTX Spark, an Arm superchip pairing a Blackwell RTX GPU of up to 6,144 CUDA cores with a Grace CPU of up to 20 cores and up to 128GB of unified memory shared between them. Two chip configurations exist: an 18-core CPU with 5,120 GPU cores in the base model, and a 20-core CPU with the full 6,144-core GPU. Nvidia positions the graphics near RTX 5070 laptop class, at a much lower power draw (45 to 80W). Microsoft claims the new thermal design has 2.5 times the capacity of the previous 15-inch Surface Laptop, and says the machine holds 99% of its performance when unplugged.

Performance Benchmarks

Microsoft's comparison target is the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip, and its numbers are manufacturer claims, not independent results. Microsoft says RTX Spark machines are 2.1 times faster at time-to-first-token, 4.3 times faster at AI image generation and 6.2 times faster at AI video generation than the MacBook Pro, measured on preproduction hardware. Nvidia's stated peak of up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI compute is a theoretical figure that leans on sparsity, so real throughput will be lower. For gaming, Microsoft demonstrated Gears of War: E-Day at 60 frames per second on stage, confirmed by a Gizmodo reporter who played it at the event at medium settings with DLSS upscaling. Independent benchmarks have not been published yet, since the laptop ships October 16.

Battery & Charging

Microsoft has not published battery-life hours for the Surface Laptop Ultra, saying only that battery life varies with use. Charging is a genuine innovation: Magnetic Connect, which Microsoft calls the world's first built-in magnetic USB-C charging on a laptop. The right-side USB-C port is magnetized so the cable snaps into place and detaches if snagged, while all three USB-C ports still accept standard USB-C chargers. Reports say a 140W magnetic cable and adapter ship in the box.

Price & Availability

Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra on October 7, 2026 at its San Francisco event, opened pre-orders the same day, and says it goes on sale October 16 from Microsoft.com and select retailers. The base configuration (18-core CPU, 5,120-core GPU, 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD) starts at around $2,599, about $400 under the 16-inch MacBook Pro's $2,999. Full 20-core configurations start at around $3,699, and the top 128GB model costs around $5,899. Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 cash back on eligible MacBook Pro trade-ins in the US and Canada through November 23. Rival RTX Spark laptops from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI ship the same day, with the MSI Prestige N16 Flip AI+ starting at around $3,299, and a $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box desktop for developers ships in November.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Up to 128GB of unified memory with native CUDA, for running large AI models locally
  • Blackwell GPU near RTX 5070 laptop class, with ray tracing and DLSS in a slim chassis
  • 2,000-nit mini-LED 120Hz display, the best Microsoft has shipped on a Surface
  • Full ports including HDMI, USB-A and an SD reader, plus Magnetic Connect charging
  • User-removable SSD, and about $400 cheaper than the 16-inch MacBook Pro at base spec

Cons

  • The $2,599 base model ships with only 24GB of memory, tight for AI workloads
  • No independent benchmarks yet; the AI performance figures are Microsoft's own claims
  • Windows on Arm with Prism emulation remains unproven for games and pro software
  • No published battery-life figures, and no pen support on the touchscreen
  • Top configurations reach nearly $5,900, and the 128GB model is already out of stock at Microsoft

Verdict

The Surface Laptop Ultra is the most interesting Windows laptop in years: RTX Spark credibly combines RTX-class gaming, CUDA development and large local AI models in one slim machine, and the display and ports are best-in-class. But it is a first-generation chip on a new Windows-on-Arm platform, so early buyers are betting on Microsoft's emulation and Nvidia's drivers rather than proven results. For developers running local AI models or creators working with CUDA, the mid-tier configurations look compelling. For everyone else, waiting for independent reviews is smarter.
