A man has been mauled to death by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in northern England after entering the animal's enclosure on Saturday afternoon. South Yorkshire Police said the man was attacked at around 1:35pm on October 10, 2026, and was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics. The tiger was unharmed, and police say there is no wider risk to the public.

What Happened at the Tiger Enclosure

According to South Yorkshire Police: "At 1.35pm today (Saturday 10 October) we received reports of a man entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury. Emergency services attended and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

Witnesses told reporters the man appeared to deliberately climb into the two-acre "Land of the Tigers" exhibit. One visitor said he was seen "dancing happily with his AirPods in" about 20 minutes before the incident, and another said he asked a stranger to photograph him with the tiger in the background — possibly the last photo on his phone. He appeared to be alone, and one witness said she believed "he just wanted to play with the tiger."

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service sent two land ambulances, an air ambulance and a doctor to the park. The man's family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers. He has not been publicly identified.

Witnesses Describe Chaos as Park Was Evacuated

The park was immediately evacuated. Karmelle Pelham, 39, who was visiting from Worksop with family, said staff ushered them out and she heard what sounded like several gunshots, then saw a helicopter circling. "There was big black tarpaulin over the tiger enclosure," she said. Other witnesses reported hearing around five loud bangs — believed to be gas canisters fired to drive the animal back — and staff erected black screens around the enclosure.

Video of the attack circulated on social media, showing the tiger mauling the man as visitors screamed. Both police and the park have urged people not to share the distressing footage.

Tiger Unharmed; Park Closed for the Weekend

Addressing rumors, police confirmed: "The animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident and there is no wider risk to the public." Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which opened in 2009, said its emergency response procedures were "immediately activated" and that it is working closely with authorities to establish exactly what happened.

"The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff and animals remain our highest priority," the park said. "The park is now closed and will remain closed tomorrow." The park confirmed it will stay shut for the rest of the weekend.

The Takeaway

This is a tragedy on every side — a man lost his life, visitors and staff were left traumatized, and an endangered Amur tiger is at the center of a global debate about how it happened. The key questions now are how the man got inside the enclosure and whether anything could have stopped him. Police enquiries continue.
