At 75, Rajinikanth has done it again. Sun Pictures announced on October 22 that Jailer 2 crossed roughly $58 million worldwide in just seven days, making it the highest-grossing first week in the history of Tamil cinema. Trade trackers put the actual figure even higher, at about $61 million, which would also make the Nelson Dilipkumar sequel one of the fastest Indian films ever to reach the $50 million mark.
The record maker and the record breaker
The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed action entertainer released in theaters on October 15, 2026, riding an extended festive weekend that included Dussehra holidays. Its four-day global opening reached $44.5 million across more than 20 markets, the second-biggest weekend frame in the world that weekend, and its opening day of about $16.3 million set a new all-time Tamil record, beating Coolie, as the Deccan Herald reported.
Overseas markets went wild
International audiences delivered the real shockwave. The film grossed $22.24 million overseas in its first week, surpassing the lifetime international collections of Vijay's Leo ($21.5 million) and even the original Jailer ($20.7 million), becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film ever in international markets. The run was powered by advance bookings that crossed $1 million before release, followed by strong walk-in demand on opening day across North America, the Gulf, Malaysia and the UK, according to Sacnilk's territory-wise breakdown.
The streak that keeps breaking
The records kept stacking up through the week. Jailer 2 became the fastest Tamil film to cross $31.7 million in domestic net, doing it in seven days and beating Rajinikanth's own 2.0 (eight days), Vijay's Leo (eleven days) and the original Jailer (sixteen days), as the Deccan Herald reported. Its day-seven net of $2.97 million stands as the single biggest Wednesday collection in Tamil cinema history. It also became the fastest Kollywood film to cross $21.1 million in Tamil-language net alone, taking six days, one fewer than Leo.
Stars lined up to cheer
The triumph has resonated across the industry. Pushpa star Allu Arjun posted on X praising Rajinikanth's screen presence, style and charisma, joking that only Rajini could smash the record "without tearing his shirt." The Hindu noted Sun Pictures hailed their star as "The Box Office Emperor," and trade analyst Sumit Kadel praised the studio for reporting figures "without inflating the numbers," predicting the second weekend would go "bonkers." All this came despite mixed reviews and a low-key publicity campaign with no breakout chartbuster. As the Indian Express reported, the film now ranks fourth among the highest-grossing Tamil films ever, with only 2.0 ($72.9 million), Leo ($63.9 million) and the original Jailer ($63.8 million) ahead, and it is closing fast on the all-time crown, which Rajinikanth himself holds.
The takeaway: a 75-year-old superstar, a franchise sequel with no gimmicks, and an audience that turned an extended festive week into box office history. Rajinikanth remains, undeniably, the one-man box office army of Tamil cinema.
