Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 box office run has turned historic. The Nelson Dilipkumar sequel closed its opening weekend (October 16 to 18, 2026) with an estimated 424.25 crore ($44.7 million) at the worldwide box office, making it the biggest opening weekend ever for a Tamil film. Released on Thursday, October 15, it piled up the haul in four days, and a Sunday jump of 18.2 percent over Saturday shows word of mouth doing the heavy lifting.

Record-Breaking Weekend, By the Numbers

Trade tracker Sacnilk puts the day-wise India net collections at 59.70 crore on day one, 37.10 crore on Friday, 47.25 crore on Saturday, and 55.85 crore on Sunday. That takes the four-day India net total to 199.90 crore ($21.1 million), with the India gross at 234.25 crore ($24.7 million). Overseas, the film added 40 crore on Sunday alone, lifting the international total to 190 crore ($20.0 million). Combined, the worldwide gross stands at 424.25 crore ($44.7 million), at about 94.8 to the dollar.

The Tamil version remains the engine: on Sunday it contributed 39.95 crore net from 8,173 shows at 80 percent occupancy, followed by the Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada versions. Across four days, more than 1.30 crore people visited theatres.

Jailer 2 became the fastest Tamil film ever to cross 300 crore worldwide, a feat it shares with Rajinikanth's own Coolie. It sailed past Coolie's 371 crore ($39.1 million) opening-weekend mark to claim the biggest Tamil opener of all time, and overtook Vijay's Jana Nayagan as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026, per trade estimates in The Economic Times.

Midnight Shows in North India, a First for Tamil Cinema

The frenzy has rewritten exhibition history in the North. Jailer 2 has become the first South Indian film to get post-midnight shows in North India in its original Tamil, according to Bollywood Hungama and Sacnilk. MovieMax scheduled midnight screenings at two Mumbai and Pune properties, including a 1:45 am show on Monday, October 19.

Demand is so strong that theatres across Maharashtra and the North have cut shows of competing releases, including Nayyi Navelli, Prahaar, Sohla, and Drishyam The Conclusion, to make room for more Jailer 2 screenings. The Hindi version, titled Rajini: The Jailer 2, is climbing too, an encouraging trend given the film did not release in national multiplex chains over its four-week OTT window.

The Film Behind the Frenzy

Jailer 2 brings back Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer from the 2023 blockbuster Jailer. This time, Pandian must protect his family and confront a lethal new underworld empire operating on a global scale. The cast includes Vidya Balan, S. J. Suryah, Ramya Krishnan, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, with cameos by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Hrithik Roshan. Nelson Dilipkumar directs, Anirudh Ravichander composes the music, and Kalanithi Maran produces under the Sun Pictures banner.

Nelson thanked fans on X: "Theatres are going bonkers! Thalaivar magic hits different. Thank you, dear audience, for the phenomenal love and reception for Jailer 2."

What Comes Next: 500 Crore, Then the 1000-Crore Dream?

With the Dussehra and Puja holidays on Monday and Tuesday, trade watchers expect Jailer 2 to cross 500 crore ($52.7 million) worldwide within days, and some predict a 1000-crore ($105.5 million) run, a milestone no Tamil film has reached. Reportedly made for about 300 crore ($31.6 million), the film should enter the safe zone quickly, needing around 600 crore ($63.3 million) gross for hit status.

The takeaway is simple: Rajinikanth just delivered the biggest opening weekend in Tamil cinema history, and with unprecedented North India pull, its ceiling is still being written.
