The Apple iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone. Verdict: a stunningly polished first foldable — but at $1,999, it is a luxury purchase, not a sensible one. Announced September 9, 2026, it opens to a 7.6-inch display, runs the A20 Pro chip, and goes on sale October 23, 2026.

Design & Display
Closed, it is a 5.4-inch outer screen; opened, a 7.6-inch mini-tablet. At 5.2 mm open it is Apple's thinnest iPhone ever, built from Grade 5 titanium with Ceramic Shield and IP68 resistance. The nano-texture matte inner display nearly hides the crease — The Verge could not detect it by touch, and Tom's Guide could see it but not feel it. Apple dropped Face ID for Touch ID in the side button, and Marques Brownlee called the asymmetric outer screen awkward for left-handed users.
Performance
The A20 Pro is the headline. Beebom measured 4,719 single-core and 12,677 multi-core on Geekbench 6 — the first phone chip to cross 12,000 multi-core points on six cores, about 21% and 30% faster than the A19 Pro. Against its direct rival, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at 3,564/10,173 per MakeUseOf), the A20 Pro is roughly 31% faster in single-core and 25% faster in multi-core. Super cores reach 4.93 GHz, and GPU compute hit 62,351 versus the Fold 8's 14,775 in Geekbench 7. Apple Pencil (USB-C) support arrives later this year.
Camera
The cameras are the weak point: a 48 MP Fusion Main and 48 MP Fusion Ultra Wide, but no dedicated telephoto — just "optical-quality" 2x zoom cropped from the main sensor (the iPhone 18 Pro reaches 8x). The 12 MP under-display selfie camera was described by Brownlee as undeniably poor. Apple leans on software: Duo Preview shows subjects a live preview on the outer display, Kid Cue plays animations for kids, and Duo FaceTime turns the cover screen into a rear-camera selfie viewfinder. Video hits 4K 120 fps with Dolby Vision. Apple's samples look great, but PhoneArena notes they were shot by professionals in planned lighting — treat them as best-case.
Battery & Charging
A dual-cell battery split across both halves delivers up to 24 hours of regular use (Apple), 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, and 44 hours on the outer display, with about 50% charge in roughly 20 minutes. The big inner screen drains it far faster than the outer one.
Price & Availability
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256 GB, rising to $2,199 (512 GB), $2,599 (1 TB), and $3,199 (2 TB), in Star White and Night Sky. Apple's "Get Ready" prep opens October 12, pre-orders begin October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and sales start October 23, 2026 in 70+ countries. Early supply is expected to be tight — analysts project around 6 million units for 2026. On a $1,999 first-gen foldable, AppleCare+ ($19 inner-display cover replacement) is an easy sell.
Verdict
The iPhone Duo is Apple arriving seven years late to foldables and shipping the most refined first-gen foldable yet — minimal crease, smart software, and a chip that destroys its rivals. But with no telephoto, a weak selfie camera, and unproven durability, it is a luxury for early adopters. Apple loyalists who have always wanted a foldable should buy it; everyone else should wait for the Duo 2.
Pros
- Polished first-gen foldable: minimal crease, smooth hinge, coherent iOS 27 software
- Fastest phone chip — A20 Pro is ~30% ahead of its Snapdragon rival

- Titanium build, IP68, dual battery, Apple Pencil support
Cons
- $1,999 starting price is luxury territory
- No dedicated telephoto; under-display selfie camera is poor
- 254 g / 11.3 mm closed — thicker and heavier than rival foldables
- First-gen hinge durability unproven; eSIM-only design
