Verdict: The iPhone 17 is the easiest iPhone to recommend in years. Apple finally gave its base model a 120Hz ProMotion display, doubled the starting storage to 256GB and added the A19 chip — all without raising the $799 starting price.
Announced on September 9, 2026 and on sale since September 19, the iPhone 17 closes nearly every gap critics used to point at when comparing the standard iPhone to its Pro siblings and Android rivals. It is not perfect — charging speeds still lag the Android competition — but for most buyers this is the iPhone to get.
What's new this year
- 120Hz ProMotion display with Always-On — finally on the base iPhone, after years of 60Hz.
- 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with a 3,000-nit peak outdoor brightness and anti-reflective coating.
- Apple A19 chip — 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, hardware ray tracing.
- 256GB starting storage at the same $799 price — double last year's base.
- 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera (up from 12MP) with macro, plus an 18MP Center Stage front camera that shoots vertical or horizontal without rotating the phone.
- Up to 30 hours of video playback — 8 hours more than the iPhone 16, per Apple.
Design and display
The iPhone 17 looks a lot like the iPhone 16 — aluminum frame, color-infused glass back, Ceramic Shield 2 front that Apple claims is three times more scratch-resistant. It comes in Black, White, Mist Blue, Sage and Lavender, measures 149.6 x 71.5 x 7.95 mm and weighs 177 g, with IP68 water resistance to 6 meters.
The display is the headline upgrade. The 6.3-inch panel (2622x1206, 460 ppi) adapts from 1Hz to 120Hz, supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG, and hits 3,000 nits outdoors — genuinely readable in harsh sunlight. Reviewers across the board, from Notebookcheck to Stuff.tv, call the high refresh rate the single biggest quality-of-life change: scrolling, animations and games all feel dramatically smoother.
Cameras
The 48MP Dual Fusion rear system pairs a 48MP main (f/1.6, sensor-shift OIS) with a 48MP ultra-wide (f/2.2, 120-degree field of view, macro). A 2x optical-quality crop gives a 52mm equivalent without a dedicated telephoto lens. Video runs to 4K Dolby Vision at 60fps with spatial video support.
The front camera is the sleeper upgrade: an 18MP Center Stage sensor on a square chip that auto-widens for group selfies and enables Dual Capture — recording front and rear video simultaneously.
Performance and battery
The A19 is very fast in both benchmarks and real use, with hardware-accelerated ray tracing for games and a 16-core Neural Engine driving Apple Intelligence features in iOS 26. In a real-world continuous-use drain test, the iPhone 17 lasted 10 hours 28 minutes — ahead of the iPhone 16, though behind the 17 Pro models.
Charging remains the weak spot: 50% in 20 minutes needs a 40W or higher adapter that is sold separately, and MagSafe/Qi2 wireless tops out at 25W. Android rivals at this price charge two to three times faster.
