Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Review: 200MP Zoom, Specs & Price

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max is the most technically ambitious camera phone of 2026, launched in China on October 1, 2026 with a 200MP periscope zoom, a 12,000-nit dual-layer OLED display, and an optional 1-inch camera module that screws onto the phone. Verdict: the standard 12GB Pro Max (from around CNY 9,499 / ~$1,418) is the sweet spot — the screen and zoom hardware hold up once you read the fine print, but the modular Z10 camera only works with the pricier Collector's Edition, and the phone is China-only for now with no Google apps.

Design & Display: The 12,000-Nit Screen, Decoded

The 6.9-inch dual-layer (tandem) OLED stacks two light-emitting layers so each works less hard — a design that usually means better efficiency and a longer-lasting panel. Huawei's 12,000-nit figure is measured at 1% APL (only about 1% of the screen lit), which makes HDR highlights pop but is mostly a marketing number. The number that actually matters is roughly 2,200 nits across the whole display (6,000 nits at 20% of the screen), which keeps maps and messages readable in harsh midday sun and is genuinely excellent. Last year's Mate 80 Pro Max topped out at 8,000 nits, so this is a meaningful step forward. The 1440Hz PWM dimming also reduces the flicker some users find tiring on OLED screens.

Performance: Kirin 9050 Pro's "LogicFolding" Chip

Every Pro Max variant runs the Kirin 9050 Pro (16GB RAM models), Huawei's first "LogicFolding" chip, which stacks two layers of circuitry face to face to fit more transistors in the same space — Huawei's workaround for US export limits blocking China's chipmakers from the most advanced manufacturing tools. Huawei claims a 31% overall performance gain over the previous flagship generation, plus enough on-device AI muscle to run a 30-billion-parameter MoE foundation model locally. Independent benchmark scores (Geekbench, AnTuTu) have not yet been verified by reputable outlets, so take the 31% figure as Huawei's claim for now.

Camera: One 200MP Zoom Replaces Two Cameras

Last year's Mate 80 Pro Max carried two telephoto cameras; the Mate 90 Pro Max swaps both for a single 200MP periscope at 4x. Because 200MP is so many pixels, the phone crops into the middle of the image to zoom further — at 8x, a 2x crop still leaves about 50MP of detail, which is why Huawei calls 8x "optical-quality." The telephoto sensor is large for the job at 1/1.28 inch, the same size as the main camera, and Huawei's RYYB filter (green pixels swapped for yellow to catch more light) should help in dim conditions. The catch: cropping can't beat a longer native lens in low light.

The Ruiying Z10: A 1-Inch Camera You Screw On

The wildest part of this launch is the Ruiying Z10 — not a lens clip but an entire camera with a 1-inch, 50MP RYYB sensor and a 24–240mm zoom lens (10x continuous optical zoom, f/2.0 to f/4.5) built from 19 glass elements. It screws onto the phone with a camera-lens-style HyperClick mount and borrows the phone's power, screen, and processing, recording 4K video. At nearly 350 grams for the module plus ~235g for the Collector's Edition, you're holding about 585 grams.

The fine print matters: the Z10 only works with the Pro Max Collector's Edition and the Mate 90 RS — the standard Mate 90 Pro Max can't use it. The cheapest way into the 1-inch system is the Collector's Edition 16GB+512GB at CNY 10,999 plus the CNY 5,999 module — about CNY 16,998 (~$2,537) total. Huawei also sells a CNY 19,499 (~$2,910) camera-kit bundle and a cheaper CNY 1,799 (~$269) SmallRig teleconverter kit.

Battery & Charging

The 6,800mAh battery pairs with 100W wired SuperCharge and 50W wireless charging, with 18W wired reverse charging. That's a solid capacity for a flagship camera phone, though not the 7,000mAh+ cells some Chinese flagships are pushing in 2026.

Price & Availability

The Mate 90 Pro Max launched in China on October 1, 2026 and is China-only for now — it isn't listed on Huawei's global site. Pricing: 12GB+512GB at CNY 9,499 (~$1,418), 16GB+512GB at CNY 9,999 (~$1,492), Collector's Edition 16GB+512GB at CNY 10,999 (~$1,642), and Collector's 16GB+1TB at CNY 12,999 (~$1,940). The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at CNY 10,999 in China, so Huawei still undercuts Apple — though the gap is much narrower than it was, and the Pro Max is up CNY 2,000 (25%) from the Mate 80 Pro Max's launch price. Note it runs HarmonyOS 7 with no Google apps, which decides whether you can use it outside China.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Best-in-class 12,000-nit dual-layer OLED with excellent full-screen brightness
  • Single 200MP periscope is a smart consolidation — huge zoom flexibility with a large sensor
  • Modular 1-inch Ruiying Z10 turns the phone into a real compact camera (Collector's Edition)
  • IP68 + IP69 durability and 100W/50W charging
  • Undercuts the iPhone 18 Pro Max in China while out-speccing it on paper

Cons

  • China-only launch with no Google Play services
  • Z10 module locked to the pricier Collector's Edition/RS — a $2,537 proposition at minimum
  • 25% price hike over the Mate 80 Pro Max
  • No independently verified benchmark scores yet; 31% performance gain is Huawei's claim
  • 585g combined weight makes the camera-kit setup a burden, not a pocket camera

Where to Buy

The Mate 90 Pro Max is currently a China-only release. The phone starts at around CNY 9,499 (~$1,418) for the 12GB+512GB model.

Verdict

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max is one of the most technically ambitious phones of 2026, and all three headline specs — the 12,000-nit screen, the 200MP zoom, the screw-on 1-inch camera — hold up better than expected once you read the fine print. The screen is brilliant even without the marketing number, and the single 200MP zoom is a smart consolidation. The Z10 is a fascinating experiment, but locking it to pricier editions makes the "1-inch camera phone" a $2,537 proposition. For most buyers, the plain Pro Max is the sweet spot — if you can live in Huawei's China-only, Google-free ecosystem.
