Finding an old WhatsApp message used to mean leaving the chat, opening the contact's info screen, and digging for the search option. WhatsApp is now rolling out a shortcut that puts search directly inside your chats on iPhone — and it changes the way you hunt down old messages, photos, and channel updates. Here's what the new feature does and exactly how to use it.
What you need
Before anything else, make sure you have these in place:
- An iPhone with WhatsApp updated to the latest version from the App Store (the shortcut began rolling out with iOS version 26.36.74, according to Business Today and Mathrubhumi).
- A stable internet connection — the feature arrives server-side, so WhatsApp rolls it out gradually even after you update.
- iCloud backup switched on (Settings > Chats > Chat Backup) so the messages you find are protected if you ever reinstall.
Step 1: Update WhatsApp
Open the App Store on your iPhone, tap your profile picture, and scroll to see pending updates. Find WhatsApp and tap Update. Because the rollout is gradual, you may have the latest version installed and still not see the shortcut right away — reports say it can take weeks to reach every account, so check back after a few days if it is missing.
Step 2: Open a chat and scroll up
Open any one-on-one chat, group chat, or Channel. Scroll up through older messages. A new search button appears near the top of the conversation, just below the navigation bar. Tap it and WhatsApp's search interface opens right inside the conversation — no screen change, no trip to the info page.
Step 3: Type your keyword and jump between matches
Enter a word or phrase you remember from the message. WhatsApp highlights the matches and lets you move between them with the arrow controls. Tap any result to jump straight to that message in the conversation. The search mechanics are unchanged from before — it is the same search WhatsApp has had for years, just reachable in one tap, as iPhone in Canada notes.
Step 4: Know where the button goes
The shortcut is deliberately contextual: once you scroll back down to your newest messages, the button disappears so it never clutters the interface. Scroll up again and it comes back. WhatsApp tested an earlier version in August with a floating button in the bottom-right corner, then moved it to the top before the public rollout.
Step 5: Use the other new search shortcuts
WhatsApp is also rolling out a Liquid Glass header menu inside iPhone chats. Tapping the contact's photo and name at the top of a conversation opens a pop-up menu with shortcuts to Search, Contact info, Media, links and docs, Chat theme, Disappearing messages, and Mute — with an option to add members in group chats, iGeeksBlog reports. That gives you a second fast route to search, and it works without opening the full contact or group info screen. The classic method — tapping the contact or group name and choosing Search on the info screen — still works exactly as before.
Tips and common problems
- Search works in Channels too. The same shortcut appears below the navigation bar in WhatsApp Channels, so you can hunt through older channel updates without opening the channel info screen.
- Search only finds what is still on your phone. WhatsApp search cannot recover deleted messages — deleted chats only come back from a valid backup, so keep iCloud chat backups enabled.
- Jump to a date. In chat search, tap the calendar icon to jump to messages from a specific date instead of typing keywords.
- Shortcut missing? First recheck the App Store for a WhatsApp update. If you are fully updated and still don't see it, your account simply hasn't been switched on yet — the gradual rollout means some users wait weeks.
Between the scroll-up shortcut and the new header menu, searching a WhatsApp conversation on iPhone has gone from a three-tap detour to a single tap. Update the app, scroll up in any chat, and you'll wonder why it ever took longer.
