How to Turn On Find Hub's Left-Behind Reminders on Android

Your Android phone just got smarter about your keys, wallet, and luggage — without any OS update. Google's Play services build 26.41 (released October 19, 2026) has made Left-Behind Reminders generally available in Find Hub, so your phone can now warn you the moment you walk away from a tagged item. Here's how to check you have it and turn it on.

What Changed and Why Now

October 2026 was unusual: instead of a named Android release, Google shipped the headline features through Google Play services updates 26.39 through 26.41, plus Play Store and WebView updates, according to Google's own system services release notes. That means these features reach practically any supported phone — even older ones — the same way an app update does, with no prompt and no manufacturer approval.

The two big arrivals in build 26.41 (October 19): Left-Behind Reminders in Find Hub — a native notification when you move away from a tagged item like keys or a bag, matching a long-standing Apple Find My feature — and expanded in-call scam protection, which now blocks apps from grabbing accessibility permissions during calls on Android 15 and earlier, not just the newest OS. A companion change on October 5 added NFC tap-to-view on Find Hub tags and a new tag registration flow where you can set categories, rename tags, and configure Left-Behind Reminders during setup.

What You Need

  • An Android phone with Google Play services and the Play Store (no OS version requirement — this arrives via Play services)
  • Google Play services 26.39 or later (26.41 is current)
  • Play Store app version 53.5 or later
  • A Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth tracker tag, if you want reminders for a physical item

Step 1: Check Your Play Services Version

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Go to Security & Privacy (on some manufacturer skins, look under Google instead).
  3. Tap Google Play system update and check the listed version — you want 26.39 or later.
  4. If it says an update is available, install it; Play system updates otherwise install silently in the background.

Step 2: Check Your Play Store Version

  1. Open the Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Settings, then About.
  3. Confirm the Play Store version is 53.5 or later.

Step 3: Register a Tag and Enable Left-Behind Reminders

  1. Open the Find Hub app (Google's renamed Find My Device network).
  2. Follow the new tag registration flow: give your tag a name and category.
  3. During setup, look for the Left-Behind Reminders option and switch it on for the tag.
  4. To inspect an existing tag, you can tap your phone to the tag via NFC to pull up its details and settings.
  5. Walk away from the item with your phone — if the feature is active, you'll get a notification telling you it was left behind.

Tips and Common Problems

  • Don't see the option yet? These updates roll out gradually over days or weeks — having the right version numbers is no guarantee the feature has flipped on for your account. Check again in a few days.
  • Tag not bonding? Build 26.41 also adds automatic bonding of supported locator tags to their owner — try removing and re-adding the tag if it misbehaves.
  • Chromebook users, note: the October 12 update removed Find Hub from Google's "Aluminium" (Googlebook) device class — this feature is phone-and-tag territory.
  • The scam protection is automatic. There's nothing to toggle — in-call scam protection now blocks accessibility-permission grabs during calls with unknown numbers on Android 15 and older.

The Takeaway

Google is quietly moving safety features out of the annual OS release and into the rolling Play services track — so the most important "update" on your phone this month is one you were never asked to install. Check your version numbers, register a tag, and your phone will start watching your stuff for you.
