How to Play Spotify With Siri Without Saying "On Spotify"

Spotify users on iPhone can finally stop ending every voice command with "on Spotify." Since October 13, 2026, Siri on iOS 27 learns your preferred music app — so "Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly" just works in Spotify, no app name needed. Here's how to set it up, what you need, and what to do if it doesn't stick.

What changed and why now

Until now, Siri always defaulted music requests to Apple Music — Spotify users had to append "on Spotify" to every command or Siri would play from Apple's app. Spotify announced on October 13 that Siri on iOS 27 can now learn your preferred music app. After the preference is learned, you can request tracks, albums, podcasts, audiobooks, broad queries like "play workout music," Spotify features like "play my DJ," personalized recommendations, podcast resumes, library searches and even AI Prompted Playlists — all by voice, all without naming the app. Voice playback controls (skip, volume) work too.

What you need

  • An iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or a newer model (Apple Intelligence-required hardware; the standard iPhone 15, 14 and 13 are excluded)
  • iOS 27 or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on
  • Siri's language set to English, and a region outside the EU — Apple has withheld this from the EU for now; availability covers the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa
  • The latest version of Spotify from the App Store

Step by step

  1. Update your iPhone to iOS 27: go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the update.
  2. Turn on Apple Intelligence: go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and confirm it is switched on, with Siri's language set to English.
  3. Update Spotify: open the App Store and make sure Spotify is on the latest version.
  4. Ask once with the app named: say "Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify." This seeds the preference.
  5. Drop the app name: from then on, just say "Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist." Spotify says the more frequently you use Spotify with Siri, the better Siri learns your preference, and audio requests start routing to Spotify automatically.

Tips and common problems

  • Older iPhones: if you have an iPhone 15 (standard) or earlier, the feature isn't available — keep saying "on Spotify" the old way.
  • Wrong app plays: if Siri still routes to Apple Music, keep naming "on Spotify" for a while. Spotify says the preference strengthens with repeated use; there is no manual "default music app" toggle described for this — it is learned, not switched.
  • English only at launch: Siri must run in English, and your region must be outside the EU. If you've moved regions or switched languages recently, check both.
  • It doesn't apply to everything instantly: podcasts, audiobooks and AI Prompted Playlists are all supported, but if one category misbehaves, naming the app explicitly for that category once or twice usually trains it.

Bottom line: update to iOS 27, keep Apple Intelligence on, and let Siri learn your habit. A week of naming "on Spotify" and you'll rarely have to say it again.
