Google is shrinking free Gemini access today: from October 9, 2026, anyone using the Gemini app without a paid plan loses Flash and Pro models and is locked to Flash-Lite only. The change, revealed in an updated Google support document, is the biggest pullback yet from the generous free access Google once offered.
What changes on October 9
Until now, free users could pick between Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro in the Gemini app, with some usage throttling already in place. After October 9, that choice disappears — the model picker drops Flash and Pro entirely for free accounts, leaving only Flash-Lite, described by Google as its fastest and most cost-effective model.
The downgrade does not stop at the free plan. Google AI Plus subscribers, on the $4.99-per-month tier, keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro, with no price change to offset the loss. Google says Plus subscribers will receive an email with the specific date the change takes effect for their account, so it may land a little after October 9 for some users.
Who keeps what: the new model lineup by plan
| Plan | US price | Models after the change |
|---|---|---|
| Free (no subscription) | $0 | Flash-Lite only — loses Flash and Pro |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99/month | Flash-Lite + Flash — loses Pro (per-account date via email) |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/month | All three models + Deep Think |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99/month and up | All three models + Deep Think |
The one upside lands at the top: Google AI Pro subscribers gain Deep Think, a new parallel-reasoning mode for "maximum parallel reasoning" on complex tasks, previously exclusive to AI Ultra. All models also get new low, medium, and high effort settings — higher effort gives more thorough answers but burns through your usage limit faster. The change applies to Gemini Apps on personal accounts; managed Workspace accounts are not included in the notice.
What to do before the deadline
- Heavy Flash or Pro users: if coding, math, long-document summaries, or multi-step research are your daily work, test those same tasks on Flash-Lite now — the quality gap will be noticeable, and AI Pro at $19.99/month is the cheapest way to keep Pro and gain Deep Think.
- AI Plus subscribers: watch for Google's email with your personal cut-off date; Pro access ends on a per-account schedule, not necessarily October 9.
- Casual users: most people never changed the model picker at all, and Flash-Lite handles quick questions fine — for them, little changes.
- Teams: professionals running work through personal Gemini accounts should check which model their workflows actually depend on before the cut hits.

The takeaway: Google's AI honeymoon is over. Flash-Lite keeps Gemini free, but the real power — Flash for balance, Pro for deep reasoning — now has a paywall in front of it. If your workflow leaned on the stronger models, the upgrade decision can't wait past today.
