FIFAe Finals 2026 Postponed: Esports' Biggest Football Tournament Delayed

The FIFAe Finals 2026 have been postponed — esports' biggest global football video game tournament will no longer take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from October 16–25 as planned. FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation announced the decision on Thursday, October 15, 2026, citing the impact of recent attacks on Saudi Arabia on the logistical arrangements needed to stage the event.

The announcement caps a week of chaos for international sport in the kingdom. A strike on Riyadh's international airport on October 10 killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300, with Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement claiming responsibility for the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade.

The Attack That Forced FIFA's Hand

The FIFAe Finals 2026 were due to open in Jeddah on October 16 — just one day after organisers pulled the plug. In their statement, the organisers said:

"The decision follows an assessment of recent developments in the region and their impact on the logistical arrangements required to stage the tournament. Further announcements on the FIFAe Finals will be communicated in due course."

No new dates have been announced for the tournament.

Teams Were Already Walking Away

The postponement did not come out of nowhere. Japan and Brazil withdrew their esports teams on October 10 after assessing the situation in the host country — the same day as the airport strike. With two of the world's powerhouse gaming nations refusing to travel, the tournament's credibility was already in doubt before FIFA's announcement.

The FIFAe Finals bring together the best players of the football video game on the planet, and the Jeddah edition was shaping up as a landmark event for the kingdom's growing esports ambitions. Instead, it has become the latest casualty of a security crisis.

Saudi Arabia's Sporting Calendar Under Siege

The fallout is spreading far beyond esports. The Six Kings Slam exhibition tennis tournament has been moved from October to December 27–30, with Riyadh Season organizers citing organizational and logistical challenges. Golf's Asian Tour said it is monitoring developments ahead of next month's Saudi International in Riyadh.

Most ominously for world football, the Asian Football Confederation said it remains open to delaying the AFC Asian Cup — scheduled to kick off on January 7, 2027, across venues in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar — until 2028 if necessary. AFC president Salman Ebrahim Al Khalifa told reporters he was in "no hurry to make a decision," adding that "we could move back a year to 2028 if we need to. But at the moment, we are monitoring the situation and everything is on schedule." The Korea Football Association said it is also closely monitoring developments.

Takeaway: Saudi Arabia has spent billions turning itself into the world's newest capital of sport — esports, tennis, golf, and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The FIFAe Finals postponement is the clearest sign yet that the October 10 attack has put that entire project on pause. Whether the Jeddah tournament finds new dates — and whether the 2027 Asian Cup stays on schedule — now depends on events far beyond FIFA's control.
