Hollywood has officially entered the two-month countdown to "Dunesday" — the December 18, 2026 box-office clash between Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three and the Russo brothers' Avengers: Doomsday. Two of the most anticipated blockbusters of the decade will open in the United States on the same Friday, two months from now, setting up a holiday-season battle for supremacy that has fans comparing the moment to 2023's Barbenheimer phenomenon.
How the December 18 showdown took shape
The collision course was set back in June 2024, when Warner Bros. reserved December 18, 2026 for a Denis Villeneuve event film that would become Dune: Part Three. Disney later moved Avengers: Doomsday from its planned May 2026 release to the very same date, locking in the head-to-head contest. The two stars have taken it in good humor: during a January 2026 Q&A in Los Angeles for Timothee Chalamet's film Marty Supreme, Robert Downey Jr. joked that the shared date had been dubbed "Dunesday" — "We'll see if we're still friends by then."
Release dates differ by territory. Avengers: Doomsday is expected to open December 16 in the UK, China, France, Malaysia and Singapore; December 17 in India, Australia and Mexico; and December 18 in the US, Canada and Japan. Dune: Part Three opens in North American theaters and IMAX on December 18, with most international markets getting it December 16 and early IMAX screenings on December 14 and 15.
The IMAX battle: Warner Bros. strikes first
The clash has already spilled into premium-format territory. Dune has reportedly secured exclusive IMAX screenings for its opening three weekends, leaving Avengers: Doomsday without access to the format during the crucial initial period. Warner Bros. is leaning into the advantage, promoting the film's IMAX 70mm screenings and more than an hour of expanded aspect-ratio footage as a marquee attraction.
Disney has countered with Infinity Vision, a certification standard for premium large-format screens covering screen size, brightness and sound. TheWrap reports Disney insiders still see a path to a $1 billion global gross — Barbie and the live-action Lilo & Stitch both crossed that mark without IMAX support — and the studio plans to push Dolby, D-Box and 4DX screenings hard on opening weekend.
Cast showdown: Atreides vs. Doom
Dune: Part Three adapts Frank Herbert's Dune Messiah, jumping roughly 17 years past Dune: Part Two as Paul Atreides faces the consequences of his reign. Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya return alongside Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin, with Robert Pattinson joining as a new villain. The 2-hour-20-minute film features a Hans Zimmer score and a screenplay co-written by Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan.
Avengers: Doomsday brings Robert Downey Jr. back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, joined by Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal. The sprawling ensemble also includes Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden. Analysts give Marvel the likely opening-weekend edge thanks to its loyal fan base, while suggesting Dune could follow the Oppenheimer playbook: a slower start, momentum over time, and serious awards attention.
Takeaway: a double event for cinema
Unlike Barbenheimer, where Barbie and Oppenheimer drew different audiences, Dunesday pits two tentpoles against many of the same moviegoers — which could split the audience or fuel event-level demand for both. Two months out, the countdown has begun, the stars are trading jokes, and December 18, 2026 is set to be the biggest day of the year for cinemas.
