Decades before the word "influencer" existed, C.Z. Guest was already living the lifestyle-brand playbook — and now the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film is giving the original style icon her first major museum exhibition. "C.Z. Guest: Portrait of an American Style Icon" opens October 15, 2026 and runs through February 21, 2027 at 1600 Peachtree St NW in Atlanta, Georgia, presenting her personal wardrobe to the public for the first time.
Who Was C.Z. Guest
Born Lucy Douglas Cochrane in Boston on February 19, 1920, C.Z. Guest married polo champion Winston Guest — a cousin of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill — on March 8, 1947, in a wedding held at Ernest Hemingway's home in Havana, Cuba. She became one of the defining faces of 20th-century American elegance: elected to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1959, gracing the cover of TIME magazine on July 20, 1962, and reigning as one of Truman Capote's famous "Swans" — the circle of Manhattan society women who dominated 1960s high society.
Her signature look was clean-cut and unfussy — light floral dresses with double pearls, tennis whites, cashmere, tailored jackets — loyal above all to Mainbocher and Givenchy. She was photographed by Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn and Slim Aarons, and painted by Salvador DalÃ.
The "Original Lifestyle Influencer"
After a 1976 riding injury ended her equestrian pursuits, Guest did something remarkable: she built a personal-brand empire blending fashion, gardening, entertaining and home products — roughly 30 years before Instagram. She published gardening books, wrote a syndicated gardening column carried in 350 newspapers, launched a cashmere sweater collection in 1985 and a sportswear line in 1986, and in 1990 introduced "C.Z.'s Bug Spray" alongside hand-blown garden ornaments sold on QVC. It is this instinct that earned her Town & Country's "original lifestyle influencer" label.
What the Exhibition Includes
According to SCAD FASH, the show presents ensembles and accessories from Guest's personal wardrobe for the first time, drawn from the SCAD Museum of Art Permanent Collection after her daughter Cornelia Guest donated the costume archive. Featured designers include Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Mainbocher, Adolfo, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino and Max Mara — with Max Mara presenting the exhibition. Photographs and illustrations by Slim Aarons, Cecil Beaton and Andy Warhol round out the display.
W Magazine calls it "the first exhibition devoted to the personal style of a Truman Capote Swan" — a genuine fashion-history milestone. The show is curated by Stefano Tonchi with SCAD FASH curator Ariel Stark. A related highlight: on November 10, Cornelia Guest joins the cast of Emily in Paris for an artist talk at SCADshow, ahead of the companion exhibition "Emily in Paris: Fashion Without Rules," which runs November 11, 2026 to March 14, 2027.
For anyone who believes personal style is a life's work, C.Z. Guest's wardrobe — unfussy, precise, unmistakably American — is finally getting the museum treatment it always deserved.
