The Portuguese Football Federation has handed captain Cristiano Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a €255 ($285) fine for leaving the national team camp without permission, closing a dramatic disciplinary case that has divided football fans worldwide. The 41-year-old forward's clash with new head coach Jorge Jesus now threatens to overshadow Portugal's international campaign.

What the Federation Decided

The federation's disciplinary council announced Monday that it had upheld the charge against Ronaldo in full, finding he had deliberately committed a disciplinary offense under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations — which covers a player leaving or missing national-team training, a match, or a related activity without valid justification, Al Jazeera and Reuters reported.

The suspension was backdated to September 30, the day Ronaldo left the camp — meaning he would be eligible again on November 14, when Portugal host Denmark in the UEFA Nations League, followed by Wales on November 17. The fine of 2.5 disciplinary units, or €255, was set below the usual range for professional players.

The Jesus Rift

The saga began on September 27, when Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute in Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway. The forward accused Jesus of twice breaking his word about his role and playing time — he said he had been told he would play around 30 minutes. When Jesus then indicated he would not start against Denmark, Ronaldo left the Copenhagen camp a day before the match, missing 31 team activities including training, meals, briefings, and both matches.

Jesus denied making any agreement with Ronaldo, though he left the door open for the captain's return after Portugal's 2-1 win.

Ronaldo's Side of the Story

In a lengthy Instagram statement on October 6, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and supporters, accepting responsibility for his departure. He urged the federation to impose a penalty, arguing his status as captain and role model meant he should be judged strictly, not leniently — while insisting he was not retiring from international duty: "I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team."

Federation president Pedro Proença said everyone in the organization wanted Ronaldo back in the fold once the matter was resolved. Jesus, too, has said he would select Ronaldo if he remained committed to club football and available for call-up.

A Team Winning Without Its Captain

Adding fuel to the debate, Portugal won both matches without Ronaldo, maintaining a perfect record through four matches and sitting atop their Nations League group. For some fans, the ban punishes a legend who has given everything; for others, the council's ruling rightly asserts that no player — not even the most-capped man in international football history, with 234 caps — is bigger than the team.

One question lingers: the council referred a separate question to its legal directorate on whether the sanction should be communicated to UEFA and FIFA for possible wider enforcement, per TugaFutebol.
