Connor Bedard's season debut for the Chicago Blackhawks may arrive as soon as Tuesday night, with head coach Jeff Blashill telling reporters Monday that the 21-year-old captain is "trending" toward playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins after joining full-contact practice on Sunday.

Bedard has yet to play this season after undergoing left shoulder surgery in early July, following an injury sustained during offseason training in Vancouver. He was originally expected to be out until early November on a roughly four-month timeline, but his rapid progress has moved that date up by weeks.

Full-contact practice marks the turning point

The decisive step came on Sunday, Oct. 11, when Bedard shed his non-contact jersey and participated fully in team practice — battle drills, 5-on-5 play, and contact along the boards. It was his first full-contact session since the surgery that sidelined him in July.

"There's no real official date or anything, but obviously a good step today, getting to practice with the team and feel contact and be in battle drills, 5-on-5, stuff like that," Bedard told reporters. "I felt really good. I'll talk to the doctors here soon and find a game."

Blashill has not ruled out Tuesday's home game against the Penguins, though the decision hinges on one more doctor's appointment expected this week. "Certainly inching closer to being involved in a variety of ways," Blashill said. He added that the final call could become a "coach's decision" if the medical clearance arrives in time.

Bedard's return would reshape Chicago's lineup

At Monday's practice, Bedard skated at his usual No. 1 center spot, flanked by Roman Kantserov on the left and Patrick Kane on the right — a potential top line that pairs the 2023 No. 1 overall pick with Chicago's three-time Stanley Cup champion, who returned to the Blackhawks in July on a two-year, $16 million contract.

The pairing carries symmetry: Bedard made his NHL debut against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins in October 2023, and he could make his season debut against the same franchise nearly three years later.

Bedard also worked on the top power-play unit during practice — a unit that desperately needs him. Chicago has scored just once in 14 opportunities with the man advantage.

Why the Blackhawks can't wait

Without their captain, the Blackhawks have stumbled to a 1-5 start, averaging just 2.0 goals per game. That figure ranks in the bottom five league-wide, and their 7.1% power-play conversion sits near the NHL's basement. Bedard led the team with 75 points (30 goals, 45 assists) in 69 games last season despite missing time with another shoulder injury, and he is coming off a July in which Chicago signed him to a five-year, $75 million contract and named him the second-youngest captain in franchise history.

The timing is forgiving: Chicago opens a three-game homestand this week, hosting Pittsburgh on Tuesday, the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, and the Dallas Stars on Saturday — three chances for Bedard to ease back into NHL pace.

If Tuesday proves too soon, Thursday against the Jets is the natural fallback. Either way, the Blackhawks' rebuild has its centerpiece back on the horizon.
