India wrapped up its Asian Games 2026 campaign in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday, October 3, finishing fourth on the overall medal table with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze — the second-highest tally in the country's Asian Games history. An extraordinary late rush, with 11 of the 21 gold medals arriving in the final two days, powered India back into the top five ahead of Sunday's closing ceremony.

Hockey gold caps golden final day

The final day of competition on October 3 belonged to India's team sports. The men's hockey team thrashed Malaysia 5-1 in the final to defend its Asian Games gold — the first time India has ever successfully retained the title. Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring and struck twice, with Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra completing the rout. The triumph also sealed direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The women's hockey team had earlier ended a 44-year wait for an Asian Games title, making Nagoya a historic edition for Indian hockey on both fronts.

Cricket double and historic firsts

India's cricket squads completed a title sweep: the Shreyas Iyer-led men's team beat Pakistan by 19 runs in Nisshin to retain its gold, while the women's team defended its title by defeating Sri Lanka. Both kabaddi teams also struck gold.

Two teenagers rewrote the history books: 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod became the first Indian woman to win individual recurve archery gold at the Asian Games, while Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win Asian Games golf gold. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain added a gold to become only the second Indian woman to win Asian Games boxing gold after Mary Kom, and wrestlers Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal took titles.

Medal tally: India 4th, China on top

Athletics was India's biggest contributor with 24 medals, followed by shooting with 15 medals (three gold). Archery led all disciplines for gold with five, while boxing claimed three. The tally of 85 fell short of the record 106 medals India won at Hangzhou 2023, but it comfortably secured a second straight top-four finish.

The 20th Asian Games brought together athletes from 45 countries and regions across 43 sports and 469 medal events, with competitions spread across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from September 19. The closing ceremony takes place at Paloma Mizuho Stadium on October 4, with the Games flag handed to Doha, hosts of the 2030 edition.

The takeaway

Nagoya 2026 will be remembered as the Games where India dug deep late — 11 golds in two days, a first-ever hockey title defence, a cricket double, and a new generation of champions like Kumkum Mohod and Pranavi Urs breaking first-ever barriers. The medals stop here, but the momentum heads straight to Los Angeles 2028.
