Apple's first-ever foldable iPhone is finally here — and pre-orders are open today. The iPhone Duo, unveiled at Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event, is the biggest hardware change to the iPhone in its nearly 19-year history, starting at around $1,999. After hands-on time at the event with reviewers calling the crease "nearly invisible" and the build "the most polished foldable ever," the question is simple: is Apple's foldable worth two grand? Here is our full review.

Design and display
The Duo's headline act is its nano-texture inner display, which reviewers describe as looking "like paper," with a crease that is nearly invisible — an area where hands-on impressions say Apple has beaten Samsung at its own game. The 7.6-inch folding panel is the largest display ever on an iPhone, yet the device folds into a pocketable form. The Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge, built from 100+ components, feel premium, and IP68 dust and water resistance is a genuine rarity among foldables. It is Apple's thinnest iPhone at 5.2mm open, though at 254g and 11.3mm closed it is a chunky handful.
Performance and benchmarks
The A20 Pro on a 2nm process is the fastest chip Apple has shipped, and no independent iPhone Duo benchmarks exist yet — the device reaches stores on October 23. The closest proxy is the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which uses the same chip: Geekbench 6 scores of 4,725 single-core and 12,575 multi-core put it roughly 29% ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold 8's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (3,659 single-core) and 17% ahead multi-core. Caveat: sustained performance inside the folding chassis is untested, and thermals remain an open question until retail units ship.
Camera and battery
Dual 48MP Fusion cameras deliver Apple's computational photography with clever fold tricks — Duo Preview, Kid Cue, and rear-camera selfies — plus 4K Dolby Vision at 120fps. The glaring omission on a $2,000 phone is a telephoto lens: zoom tops out at 2x optical-quality crops. Battery claims are ambitious (up to 44 hours of video on the outer display); Apple does not publish mAh figures, so third-party estimates should be treated as unverified. Charging hits 60W wired and 25W wireless, with no charger in the box.
Pros and cons
- Pros: nearly invisible crease on a stunning nano-texture display; IP68 water and dust resistance; premium titanium build; thoughtful fold-aware iOS 27 software; 3,000-nit screens; A20 Pro 2nm power.
- Cons: $1,999 starting price, up to around $3,199; no telephoto lens; Touch ID instead of Face ID; eSIM only; first-gen hinge durability untested against Samsung's 8th-gen Fold; heavy at 254g.
Price and availability
Pre-orders opened October 16, 2026, with in-store availability from October 23 in 70+ countries and 28 more on October 30. Prices run from around $1,999 (256GB) to around $3,199 (2TB), with financing from about $83.29/month over 24 months or Apple Upgrade leases from about $57.99/month.
Where to buy
- Apple — official announcement and pre-order info (best for unlocked models)
- Best Buy — iPhone Duo 256GB Star White (AT&T), around $1,999.99, released 10/23/2026; note this SKU is carrier-locked to AT&T
- Goji Mobile — price comparison across T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon, from around $2,000
Verdict
The iPhone Duo is the most polished — and most expensive — foldable ever made: a breathtaking nano-texture display and IP68 build justify the hype, but at $1,999 with no telephoto and an untested first-generation hinge, early adopters are paying a premium to beta-test the future. If you want the safest foldable, wait for long-term durability reports; if you want Apple's vision of the foldable today, pre-orders are open now.
