Amazon just killed the Fire tablet: the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, announced October 8, 2026, is a 12-inch aluminum tablet with real Android, the Google Play Store, a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 chip, and Alexa+ baked in. Verdict: the most credible iPad rival Amazon has ever built — flagship-tier hardware at $499.99, half the iPad Pro's price — but raw performance trails Apple silicon, and it ships October 14.

Design & Display

Stamped from a single piece of aluminum, the 12 Pro is 6.5mm thin and 550g — a genuinely premium build. The 12-inch 2.8K panel runs at up to 120Hz with a 3:2 aspect ratio, ideal for reading and documents. The headline option is the Nanomatte display on the $549.99 model: Corning-etched glass that kills glare without the haze of old matte screens.

Performance

The Dimensity 8400 pairs with 8GB of RAM (up to 16GB on Nanomatte configs). Amazon claims nearly 3x faster processing and 9x faster graphics than any tablet it has shipped — believable against the old Fire bar. Multitasking, 4K streaming, and demanding games will be fine, but it will not trade blows with Apple silicon.

Performance Benchmarks

Tablet scores aren't out yet — units ship October 14 — but the Dimensity 8400 is well-tested in phones. Against the direct top rival, the Apple iPad Pro (M4): Geekbench 6 puts the Dimensity 8400 at ~1,576 single / ~6,239 multi (Nanoreview) versus the M4's ~3,776 / ~14,647 (Geekbench Browser) — roughly 2.4x faster. AnTuTu 11: ~1,948,428; 3DMark Steel Nomad Light: ~1,346. The 12 Pro wins on value, not speed — but for streaming, reading, and light work, half the iPad Pro's price is a fair trade.

Alexa+ & Software: The Real Key Feature

Amazon's first tablets on real Android 16 with the full Google Play Store — everything Fire OS locked out. Alexa+ is woven in: summon it from any app, let On-Screen Intelligence read your display and act (opt-in, off by default), or hold hands-free live sessions. The Kindle app becomes a distraction-free reading sanctuary. Caveat: Alexa+ needs Prime or an Alexa+ subscription.

Battery & Charging

Up to 16 hours of video playback with quad Dolby Atmos speakers and Wi-Fi 6E; Kindle reading mode stretches it to 20 hours. Charging wattage is undisclosed.

Price & Availability

Around $499.99 for 8GB/128GB in Graphite; around $549.99 for Nanomatte. Pro Pen ($89.99) and Pro Keyboard ($149.99) are extra — a full setup nears $790. Pre-orders are open; ships October 14 in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Half the iPad Pro's price with premium aluminum hardware
  • Real Android 16 with full Google Play Store
  • Nanomatte anti-glare display developed with Corning
  • Deep Alexa+ integration and a first-class Kindle reading mode

Cons:

  • Dimensity 8400 trails the iPad Pro's M4 chip badly
  • Ships October 14 — no full independent reviews exist yet
  • Alexa+ requires Prime or an Alexa+ subscription
  • Camera specs undisclosed; only Graphite color

Verdict

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the tablet Amazon should have been making for years: premium hardware, a superb 120Hz 2.8K display, real Android with Google Play, and Alexa+ woven through it. The chip won't match Apple silicon and launch-day buyers are buying on promise — but for media, reading, and light work, this is an easy recommendation once units ship.
