Netflix has finally lifted the curtain on Akka, its female-led 1980s gangster saga starring Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte — and announced that the series will premiere on the streamer on October 30, 2026. The official teaser, unveiled on October 17 to coincide with Keerthy Suresh's birthday, introduces the two leads as Bhavani and Rudra, rival matriarchs ruling the fictional South Indian kingdom of Pernuru.
Produced by YRF Entertainment, Akka is being positioned as one of Netflix's biggest year-end bets: a period crime epic where women don't just participate in the underworld — they own it. For Keerthy, the series marks her first collaboration with both Netflix and YRF Entertainment, while for Radhika Apte it continues a long and successful run with the streamer.
What the teaser reveals: Bhavani vs. Rudra
The teaser introduces Keerthy Suresh as Bhavani, the reigning leader of Pernuru's ruling sisterhood — known as the Akkas — and Radhika Apte as Rudra, a formidable rival with a different vision for how the kingdom should be led. For over 800 years, the Akkas have controlled Pernuru's gold trade and commanded a powerful force of female warriors sworn to protect the order.
That order shatters when a mysterious outsider arrives with a personal mission, sending the all-powerful sisterhood spiraling into a storm of violence, revenge and survival. The teaser's tone is operatic and blood-soaked, with the series' tagline — "Ab chalega beheno ka shaasan" — making its matriarchal power struggle explicit.
A debut director and a bold world
Akka is written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty, marking his directorial debut. Set in the 1980s, the show builds a fictional world where a matriarchal society has built, governed and protected its own territory for generations — a setup that flips the conventions of the male-dominated gangster genre on its head.
Alongside the two leads, the cast includes veteran actor Tanvi Azmi, with Aditya Chopra, Yogendra Mogre and Akshaye Widhani serving as executive producers. The project has been a long time coming: YRF announced Akka in November 2023 and revealed a first-look teaser in early 2025, making the October 30 premiere the payoff after a year of anticipation.
What the stars say
Speaking on the teaser launch, Keerthy Suresh said Bhavani is "one of the most unique and memorable characters I have had the opportunity to play," adding that the project's distinctiveness and the world it inhabits were what drew her to it.
Radhika Apte described Rudra as "a fascinating character, driven by her own convictions and an instinct to challenge the world around her," noting that she was drawn to "the complexity of its characters and the tensions that emerge from their differing perspectives."
