Hollywood's self-styled "Met Gala of the West" returned in full force on Saturday, October 17, 2026, as the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala took over the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles — with Taylor Swift closing the night in a head-turning ice-blue Dior gown and a live performance.

The black-tie fundraiser, co-chaired by Tom Ford, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw with Rolex as presenting partner, supports the museum's exhibitions, public screenings, and educational programs. Last year's edition raised more than $12 million, per the Associated Press — and this year's guest list suggested the bar was set just as high.

Three honorees, three eras of cinema

The evening's centerpiece was the presentation of three awards recognizing outsized contributions to film:

  • Charlize Theron received the Icon Award, celebrating a career the museum described as having a significant global impact.
  • Colman Domingo was presented with the Vantage Award, honoring his work challenging dominant narratives and shaping modern storytelling.
  • John Carpenter — the legendary filmmaker and composer behind Halloween and The Thing — accepted the Luminary Award alongside collaborator Sandy King for contributions that expanded the creative possibilities of filmmaking.

"The Academy Museum Gala is a celebration of the artists and storytellers whose work continues to shape the cultural impact of cinema around the world," said museum director and president Amy Homma. "For our sixth annual Gala, we are honored to recognize John Carpenter, Colman Domingo and Charlize Theron, whose extraordinary careers exemplify the creativity, innovation and excellence that continues to move the industry forward."

Taylor Swift steals the carpet — then the stage

Swift's appearance had been announced by the museum on October 8, and she did not disappoint: a custom ice-blue strapless Dior gown (from Jonathan Anderson's Dior) with a crystal-encrusted bow, Chopard diamonds, and a newly short curled bob. She attended solo — Travis Kelce stayed behind to prepare for the Kansas City Chiefs' October 18 home game against the Chargers.

"Taylor is an extraordinary talent whose work resonates around the world," Homma said. "We are thrilled to welcome her to this year's gala and look forward to her performance to close a wonderful evening."

The red carpet delivered its usual parade of fashion statements: Theron in sheer black Haider Ackermann for Tom Ford with cutouts; Kim Kardashian in an archival 1951 Balenciaga gown styled by Law Roach, channeling Elizabeth Taylor with bouffant hair; Demi Moore in a sculpted two-tone bodice with a voluminous lilac skirt; and Janelle Monáe in a Robert Wun butterfly gown with actual wings.

Also walking the carpet: A$AP Rocky, Kristen Wiig, Pamela Anderson, Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Hudson, Adrien Brody, Sabrina Carpenter, Kendall Jenner, Kate Hudson, Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake, Sigourney Weaver, Kylie Minogue, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jessica Lange in a rare appearance, Andrew Garfield, and Eddie Redmayne.

The takeaway: The gala was not televised or livestreamed — it remains a private fundraiser — but its mix of Hollywood royalty, music superstars, and fashion theater confirms it has become awards season's unofficial opening night. All eyes now turn to whether Swift's rumored Oscar-buzz song for Toy Story 5 turns her from gala closer into a genuine Academy contender.
