Abhijeet Dipke detained: Delhi Police took Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), into preventive detention on Friday, October 16, 2026, hours before his planned "Lehra Do Tiranga" flag-waving gathering at Central Park in Connaught Place, New Delhi. Live video captured the moment officers stopped him outside a residence and hauled him into a police car.

The detention caught on camera

Footage streamed live on the CJP's Instagram account showed Dipke leaving a house — reported by Al Jazeera and News9live as the residence of NCP-SCP spokesperson Anish Gawande — when officers stopped him after a brief argument and escorted him into a police car. On camera, an officer told him: "We are detaining you right now." Dipke protested: "I have not broken any law right now… how can you detain me?"

AISA chief Neha Bora was also picked up near Mandi House as she tried to reach Connaught Place. Senior police officer Sachin Sharma told Reuters both were taken into preventive detention. The Times of India's live blog reported that more than 150 protesters were detained across the day on Friday.

The protest that never was

Earlier on Friday, more than 20 Delhi Police personnel had visited Dipke's Jhandewalan residence and served two notices: one under the Delhi Police Act barring him from Central Park, where Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was in force, and a second reminding him of a court directive from an earlier airport preventive-custody incident requiring a year of no public disturbance.

The planned 5 pm gathering, branded "Lehra Do Tiranga," was meant to support two CJP leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were jailed for five days this week after entering Jantar Mantar on October 13 to unfurl the national flag — days after the Centre de-notified Jantar Mantar as a protest site. Although the Delhi High Court on Thursday cleared the Tiranga march at Connaught Place, the NDMC shut Central Park to the public on October 16–17, no permission was granted, and the Rapid Action Force staged a flag march around Connaught Place.

The voter-roll row behind the standoff

The detentions are the latest flashpoint in near-daily protests this month demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists — a revision critics say favours Prime Minister Modi's BJP. Reuters reported that more than 130 million voters were deleted during the revision. The Election Commission denies favouritism and says wrongly deleted voters can re-enrol, while the BJP accuses its rivals of undermining democracy.

Responding to the detention, the CJP said on X: "Abhijeet is detained by Delhi Police. This government is so scared of the youth waving national flag."

What happens next

The Friday detentions mark Dipke's second brush with police custody within a week, and deepen the standoff between the youth movement and authorities over where — and whether — citizens can protest in the capital. With the voter-roll controversy still unresolved and Central Park closed through Saturday, the stage is set for more confrontations in the days ahead.
